Fontana Chamber Arts

Jati Lindsay

Jazz pianist Kris Bowers will play the Fontana series tonight with an invited ensemble of drummer, bassist, and guitarist. The set list will feature works from his 2014 debut album, Heroes + Misfits, covers from surprising sources (like the tUnE-yArDs) and more recent pieces from his film scores.

Described as a “rock star of early music” by Western Michigan University professor Dr. Matthew Steel, Jordi Savall will perform a solo viola da gamba program on Saturday for Fontana’s fall/winter series.

The director of Fontana, David Baldwin, joins Cara Lieurance to discuss the history and music of the Vienna Boys Choir in anticipation of the famed choral group's appearance in Kalamazoo at Chenery Auditorium.

Béla Fleck has single-handedly turned the banjo into a virtuoso solo instrument that can comfortably play with jazz combos, African trios, string quartets and orchestras. In 2010 upon completing his first concerto for banjo, The Imposter, he followed up with a companion piece for banjo and string quartet, Night Flight Over Water, which he recorded with the adventurous string quartet, Brooklyn Rider.

Sibbi Bernhardsson, a founding member of the Pacifica Quartet, talks to Cara Lieurance about their Fontana concert featuring two masterworks for solo clarinet and string quartet by Mozart and Brahms. The clarinetist for the performance is Anthony McGill, who recently accepted the position of principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic.
