Schoolcraft Farmers' Market Won't Open This Season

Occasional vendors will still be able to set up, but there won't be a formal market

SCHOOLCRAFT, MI - A lack of vendors has closed the Schoolcraft Farmers' Market located at the Schoolcraft United Methodist Church for the 2014 season. Cheri Bales, a market coordinator, said the decision not to have a Schoolcraft market this year was difficult, but just two vendors had registered for the market as of Wednesday morning, the day it was slated to open.

Report Critical of Kellogg's Efforts on Climate Change

Kellogg representative says company "has long been committed to doing what is right for environment and society"
Kellogg Co. has one of the worst track records among the largest food and beverage companies in addressing climate change and is "not doing nearly enough to cut their own carbon footprint," according to a report released late Monday.

Beef-Related Bacteria Outbreak Investigated

State officials say they're investigating an outbreak of illness that may be related to under-cooked ground beef. The departments of Agriculture and Community Health say five people have become sick and three have wound up in the hospital because of infections by E. coli bacteria. Some of the cases were reported in Ottawa and Kent counties in April and early May. The Department of Community Health says the infections appear to have a "common source,"  based on laboratory tests.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- The Kalamazoo Farmers Market opens for the season Saturday, but local officials are looking beyond this year at how the market can best accommodate its growing customer base in the future. "With all the excitement building around town around local food, it's a great time to engage with the market and we're taking ideas," said Chris Broadbent, market manager.
