gay marriage ban

The high court says it will also rule on similar bans in Ohio, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

Lifting the ban on gay marriage would bring more than $53 million into Michigan’s economy in just three years.

The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals is hearing arguments Wednesday from court cases in Michigan and three other states that have banned same sex marriage. The six lawsuits involve either challenges to the bans or question the validity of same-sex marriages performed in other states.

State Attorney General Bill Schuette says he wants the court considering whether Michigan’s gay marriage ban can stand to put the process on the fast track.

The attorney general says he’ll seek a full-panel en banc hearing from the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. That would eliminate the need for a preliminary hearing before a smaller group of judges.

In a statement issued this afternoon, Schuette said a timely decision with minimal litigation would save citizens money.
