Federal Grant Helps Firefighters Breathe Easy

PORTAGE, MI - Firefighters for six Kalamazoo area departments will be outfitted with nearly $1 million in new breathing gear thanks to a big federal grant. Fire departments from the city of Portage, Oshtemo Township, Alamo Township, Texas Township, the South Kalamazoo County Fire Authority and Pavilion Township will be getting the new self-contained breathing apparatus to replace worn or outdated SBCA equipment.

White House nixed Detroit bailout as "not viable"

Washington The White House ruled out a bailout for bankrupt Detroit because it wasn't politically possible, a senior Obama administration official said Tuesday. Gene Sperling, the director of the White House National Economic Council and the point person on the administration's efforts to help the struggling Motor City, told reporters Tuesday that it would have raised false hopes if the Obama administration had floated the idea of a bailout for Detroit.
