Grand jury on meningitis outbreak sought

LANSING - Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette wants to empanel a grand jury to investigate the recent meningitis outbreak -- allegedly caused by a contaminated steroid -- that has been blamed for 259 cases of meningitis and 14 deaths in the state.

The federal government says black babies are up to three times more likely to die than white infants. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say more African-Americans suffer from high blood pressure than whites do. Those and other disparities in health and health care are the subject of the annual Burian Lecture on Wednesday, February 20th, at Western Michigan University.

Snyder: Medicaid expansion "makes sense"

Governor Rick Snyder says he wants state lawmakers to approve expansion of Medicaid under the federal Affordable Care Act. The request is included in the budget Snyder will deliver to the legislature Thursday. The Detroit Free Press reports that about 470-thousand more low-income people would get coverage if lawmakers approve the plan. However the governor is expected to face resistance from some fellow Republicans opposed to “Obamacare”.
