Famed Irish fiddler to play with rising-star Michigan flutist and other artists

"Sean is an incredibly rhythmic player. He brings such a vitality, you couldn't miss it when he comes in. He's one of the best flute players of any age, that's playing anywhere in Ireland or America or anywhere else. He's absolutely fantastic," says fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada, talking about Sean Gavin.

Walk into the London Grill in downtown Kalamazoo on a lazy Sunday afternoon and you might forget you’re not in an Irish pub. There’s an old British telephone booth in the corner, pints of beer on almost every table, and the chatter and laughter of familiar faces playing together in an Irish session.

Fast feet, curly wigs, and straight arms: Learn more about Irish dance

The Quinn School of Irish Dance will perform this weekend at the Blackrock Medieval Festival at Olde World Village in Augusta. Erin Quinn opened the studio 12 years ago where Irish step dancing classes are held year-round. She says not many people realize the school is here or that it’s one of only four schools in Michigan that is certified to compete internationally by a dance commission in Ireland.

The Kane Sisters will perform at the Kalamazoo Nature Center Sunday

Liz Kane and her sister Yvonne grew up in the Connemara region of County Galway. Renowned for their exquisite mirror-image playing, the sisters learned to play fiddle from their grandfather and several East Galway musicians steeped in the special flowing style of the region. During the school year they teach and perform throughout the west of Ireland, and in summers travel to North America to tour and give workshops.
