LANSING, MI -- Michigan lawmakers have given final approval to controversial legislation that would allow larger political campaign contributions ahead of 2014 elections and beyond. The state's Republican-led Senate on Thursday signed off on House changes to a bill designed to double the maximum amounts that an individual or independent political action committee can donate to a candidate in any given election cycle.

House committee passes bill to double campaign donor limits, allow anonymous issue ads

A state House committee has approved a controversial bill that doubles campaign donation limits and also protects the identity of donors who pay for “issue ads”—or ads that tend to attack candidates without suggesting how citizens should vote.
Today's 5-4 vote by the House Elections and Ethics Committee followed a second day of testimony on a bill that would nullify an effort by Secretary of State Ruth Johnson to require disclosure of who pays for issue ads, which often attack candidates but don't expressly advocate how someone should vote.
