Ingham County Judge extends grand jury investigation into party-switching scheme

LANSING, MI - A one-judge grand jury looking into the political party switch scheme involving then-Rep. Roy Schmidt and Michigan House Speaker Jase Bolger is going to continue its investigation. Ingham County Circuit Judge Rosemarie Aquilina is handling the inquiry into the scheme hatched by Schmidt - then a Grand Rapids state lawmaker - and the Republican House speaker last year.

A new legislative session has begun in Lansing. Representative Jase Bolger was re-elected Speaker of the House on Wednesday. That was a foregone conclusion, the only question was whether he would get unanimous support. But two Democrats cast no votes against Bolger as speaker.

Work on so-called “Right to Work” legislation is moving ahead quickly in Lansing. Thursday morning, Governor Rick Snyder endorsed the plan that would prevent unions from requiring that all workers in an organized workplace join that union. But that ban would not apply to unionized police and fire departments.

Gongwer: SoS dismisses charges against House Speaker Jase Bolger

The Michigan Secretary of State’s office has dismissed complaints that State House Speaker Jase Bolger violated campaign finance laws. The Gongwer News Service reports that that the decision was announced in a letter Wednesday to Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer.
