Kalamazoo City Commission will meet next again week on city manager search

City commissioners spent seven hours meeting on Tuesday, first conducting hour-long interviews with all five finalists for the city manager position and then debriefing from the interviews. At the advice of Jerome Post, city of Kalamazoo human resources director, commissioners decided to reconvene at 7 a.m. Wednesday, May 29.

The candidates vying to replace retiring Kalamazoo City Manager Kenneth Collard all have current or former city manager experience and include current Michigan city managers, a state-appointed deputy treasurer, and economic development directors. City commissioners will start hour-long interviews with each candidate at noon Tuesday, May 21, in the commission chambers at Kalamazoo City Hall

Commissioners will meet at 3 p.m. in City Commission Chambers at Kalamazoo City Hall, 241 W. South St. On Tuesday, they picked a list of six finalists for the city manager job, but that pool dropped down to five Wednesday when Joyce Parker announced she would withdraw her candidacy.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Joyce Parker, emergency manager in Allen Park, Mich., has withdrawn her candidacy for the Kalamazoo city manager job. Parker said in an email late Wednesday afternoon to MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette that she had withdrawn her name from consideration for the position.

Federal sequester cuts hit Kalamazoo

The final decision on allocation of Community Development Block Grant money will be up to Kalamazoo City commissioners.
KALAMAZOO, MI -- Several Kalamazoo-area organizations will have to make do with less this year, as the sequester forces a 5 percent drop in federal funding. Laura Lam, deputy director of the city's community planning and development department, said city staff focused the funds on four areas of the city's consolidated plan that need improvement: youth education and mentoring, homeownership, streetscape enhancements and business and job development.
