Kalamazoo County Commission

There will be at least three new members on the Kalamazoo County Commission after the November election. Two years ago six incumbents decided not to run for another term.

Kalamazoo County commissioner Julie Rogers says she’ll run for a third term on the board. Rogers represents Alamo Township and parts of Oshtemo and Kalamazoo Townships in the county’s fifth district.

Kalamazoo County Commissioner John Taylor will continue to chair the Commission in 2016. Board members unanimously reelected Taylor, a Democrat, to the post Tuesday evening. They also unanimously reelected Republican Jeff Heppler to the position of vice-chair.

The commission’s 11 members appoint board leaders once a year.

Voters in Kalamazoo County will decide whether to approve a property tax proposal on Tuesday. It would raise money over six years to help homeless families find housing. Supporters say it’s essential that children have homes or they won’t do well in school and won’t thrive as adults. But opponents say there are better ways to help them.
