LANSING, MI - After receiving approval from the state Senate Thursday, a package of bills that would create mental health courts throughout Michigan now moves to the governor's desk for approval. House Bills 4694-97 would create mental health courts throughout Michigan.

Kalamazoo County Probate Judge Donald Halstead to retire

KALAMAZOO, MI - Kalamazoo County Probate Judge Donald R. Halstead has retired after serving the county for 32 years. The official date of his retirement was Monday, July 15. Reached for comment Thursday, Halstead said he decided earlier this year to retire so he can spend more time with his family.

Portage City Council approves agreement on closing District Court

District Court was closed after the retirement of Judge Carol Husum

PORTAGE, MI - With no discussion, the Portage City Council has voted for a financial agreement with Kalamazoo County over the closing of the Shaver Road district court. The agreement calls for Kalamazoo County paying Portage $70,000 a year for 10 years to cover Portage's costs by the court closing.

Kalamazoo County District Court to close Portage courthouse March 1st

The state of Michigan decided last year to eliminate a district court position through attrition. Judge Carol Husum retires at the end of this month.

KALAMAZOO, MI - The Kalamazoo County District courthouse on Shaver Road will close March 1, Chief Judge Paul Bridenstine said Tuesday. The closure will come the day following Judge Carol Husum's retirement from the bench. No current employees will lose their jobs with Husum's retirement, Bridenstine said, but her typist will also be retiring.
