KALAMAZOO, MI -- Kalamazoo Public Schools Superintendent Michael Rice had a compensation package worth $344,667 in 2012, which appears to make him the state's highest-paid school superintendent based on a examination of records by Mlive/Kalamazoo Gazette. Rice's current base salary is $214,613, KPS officials said Thursday.

Loy Norrix High School closed by power outage

KALAMAZOO, MI - An early-morning power outage left Loy Norrix high school without heat, so classes have been canceled Tuesday. A utility pole was damaged and about 1,200 Consumers Energy customers lost power at about 3:30 a.m., a spokesman for the energy company said, when a wire came into contact with a utility pole and the pole began to burn.
