Oshtemo anti-discrimination ordinance passes

Trustee Dave Bushouse cast the lone dissenting vote, saying that he didn't think the township had jurisdiction on the issue.
The non-discrimination ordinance, closely modeled on one recently adopted by Kalamazoo Township, prohibits discrimination in housing, public accommodation or employment based on race, color, sex, age, religion, national origin, height, weight, marital status, familial status, citizenship, physical or mental disability, gender identity, sexual orientation or genetic information.

BC commissioners to vote on anti-discrimination ordinance

Commissioners say they will vote on the ordinance September 3rd. Among other things it would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
Lynette Rich spoke with certainty and strength until the end, when she said young people in Battle Creek who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender need protections. "And they need our support," she said, her voice cracking as she gestured toward ordinance supporters in the crowd. "My friends."
