Conductor Andrew Koehler talks about the season-opening concert of the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra, set for Sunday at 4 pm in Chenery Auditorium. He tells Cara Lieurance that he has designed a program that shows how the symphony transitioned from a pre-curtain hors-d'ouvre to the opera to the main dish of most orchestral programs.

Renowned French-Canadian virtuoso Marc-Andre Hamelin, who admits he owns a collection of sheet music stored in over 100 crates, says there is more truth to be gleaned from a composer's musical notation than the life circumstances under which it was written. On the eve of his solo recital for The Gilmore's Piano Masters Series, Hamelin discusses the late works of Mozart and Schubert as well as his own piece, Pavane Variée (2014).

The Western Winds is a combined faculty-student group at Western Michigan University, led by Dr. Scott Boerma, who brought along graduate students Michael Gause (trumpet) and Laura Diaz (bassoon) to talk to Cara Lieurance about a concert on November 1. The program featured the world premiere of a new work by WMU professor of jazz trumpet, Scott Cowan, called La Suite de las Noches Hispanicas.

Stephanie Blythe is  an opera mega-star whose performance calendar is booked up to fifteen years in advance. But she takes time for personal projects, including solo song recitals filled with hand-picked favorites. Tonight, she'll perform American songs from the Tin Pan Alley era to the 1950s, and she won't sing alone - the audience will join in.

In a preview of the Michigan Festival of Sacred Music, executive director Elizabeth Start explains the reasons behind turning the festival into an annual event, and previews the eleven performances scheduled between October 29 and Nov 3. They include appearances by a gamelan orchestra, a trio of Syrian musicians, a Jewish-bluegrass fusion band, and the choral group The Rose Ensemble
