The city of Kalamazoo is hosting its 16th annual day of service for the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

Her name is April Reign. With a single #OscarsSoWhite tweet two years ago this month, she spurred a national conversation about the lack of diversity in Oscar nominations. It's led to greater inclusiveness among the voters in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. But "there's so much more that needs to be done," she tells WMUK's Earlene McMichael on today's WestSouthwest show (listen now, below). Reign speaks Monday in Grand Rapids.

The Executive Director of the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership at Kalamazoo College says in the history of the civil rights movement women have become symbols, rather than recognized for their work. Mia Henry says many women made valuable contributions in the fight for civil rights.

Western Michigan University English Professor Alan Webb says a Day of Learning and Action planned for Monday would be a different event if Hillary Clinton had been elected President. But Webb says the issues being discussed are important regardless of who is in the White House.
