KALAMAZOO, MI -- This year's observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day marks the 28th year that the holiday has been celebrated. Kalamazoo will keep to its traditions by offering events to honor his legacy that are free and open to the public.

WestSouthwest: A Coloma man remembers MLK and the March on Washington

Retired school teacher Harold Bragg was at the historic March on Washington in 1963. He was back in the nation's capital this past summer to mark the 50th anniversary of that march and Martin Luther King Junior's "I have a dream" speech.

WMU commemorates MLK's 1963 visit

All eyes were on the nation’s capital this summer for events commemorating the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Now Kalamazoo will have its own celebration marking the snowy night 50 years ago that King spoke at Western Michigan University, just four months after that historic address in Washington, D.C.

Kalamazoo MLK March event targets military spending

The weekend of August 24-25 marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior’s “March on Washington” where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. A vigil and march planned on Sunday in Kalamazoo to commemorate the event takes aim at the nation’s military spending. It’s organized by the group Kalamazoo Non-Violent Opponents of War as part of a week-long series of events during Occupy (Inter)National in Kalamazoo.
