KALAMAZOO, MI -- Stephen Zegree, former Western Michigan University music professor and director of the vocal jazz ensemble Gold Company, died Saturday morning at his home in Bloomington, Indiana. Zegree, 61, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this fall. He began hospice care recently. Zegree taught at Western Michigan University for 34 years before leaving in 2012 to join the faculty at Indiana University. (Kalamazoo Gazette)

Traditional African American string band The Ebony Hillbillies are one of the last of their genre. The Hillbillies have played alongside names like Pete Seeger, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Bette Midler, and The Temptations.

Western Michigan's School of Music has a new director. Bradley Wong replaced former director David Colson earlier this month.

Wong, who is a professor of music, joined Western's faculty 30 years ago as a professor of clarinet. Colson returns to the faculty after heading the School of Music for the last seven years.

Wong is a graduate of the University of Michigan and earlier attended the Interlochen First Arts Academy. He's also been a member of the Western Wind Quintet.

Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra

The new executive director of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra arrives May 19th. The symphony announced Tuesday that it's hired Peter Gistelinck for the job after a search that lasted six months. Gistelinck is currently the executive director of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. He replaces former KSO executive director Jennifer Barlament who left last year to become general manager of the Cleveland Orchestra.
