Report Calls for Slowing Expansion of Online Schools

LANSING -- States should limit expansion of online virtual schools until more information is available on why student performance lags behind other schools, according to a new analysis of virtual schools by the National Education Policy Center.

K-12 online learning grows in Michigan

Local public schools must pay for up to two online classes per student each semester in grades 5 through 12 even though students don't need to get approval from their own schools to sign up.
In what may be the biggest change, public school students in Grades 5-12 will be able to take up to two online courses per semester offered by any district or the state's virtual school - classes that will be part of a statewide catalog of online classes maintained by the Michigan Virtual University (MVU) that will be up and running in October.
