Plans to close the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant sooner than was previously announced caught many people by surprise. But Midwest Energy News reporter Andy Balaskovitz says there were some signs of an accelerated timeline.

Palisades Nuclear Power Plant operated safely last year despite an unexpected shut down. That’s according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The plant in Covert shut itself off days before a scheduled outage to refuel the plant in September.

"COVERT TOWNSHIP, MI — The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued two license amendments involving embrittlement to Palisades Nuclear Plant along Lake Michigan, saying the requests for the amendments would maintain public health and safety." (Kalamazoo Gazette)

Local environmental groups could take the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant to court this spring. The organizations say the aging plant near South Haven wants to lower its safety standards to keep running past its latest expiration date of 2017.
