UPDATE: Upton says he will tour the Palisades plant on Monday, May 13th, along with Nuclear Regulatory Commission member Kristine Svinicki.

Congressman Fred Upton says he's "outraged" by a new leak at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant near south Haven. The Saint Joseph Republican says he wants to get a first-hand look at the problem along with a member of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission "in the near future".

UPDATE: Radioactive water goes into lake before Palisades shut down

Almost 80 gallons of radioactive water was released into Lake Michigan from the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant this weekend. A spokesperson for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says that the radioactive material is not a health risk because the water was diluted before it reached the lake.
COVERT TOWNSHIP, MI - Before Sunday's shutdown of Palisades Nuclear Power Plant, about 79 gallons of diluted radioactive water were released into Lake Michigan, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Monday, May 6. But by the time the water reached the lake, the level of radioactivity had been diluted to the point where it did not represent a health or safety risk, a spokeswoman for the NRC said.

SOUTH HAVEN, MI -- Palisades nuclear power plant has been shut down for repairs, according to officials at the plant. The plant was removed from service Sunday morning for inspections and repairs to the safety injection/refueling water tank, according to Palisades spokesperson Lindsay Rose.
