Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley Backs Proposal for Part-Time Legislature

Making Michigan Legislature part-time would require amending Michigan's Constitution
LANSING, MI -- Republican Lt. Gov. Brian Calley this weekend voiced support for a petition drive and potential ballot proposal seeking to make Michigan's Legislature a part-time affair. Calley, in an email to supporters, said he intended to vote for the proposal if it makes the ballot and noted that he, Dave Agema and Justin Amash introduced their own part-time Legislature bill when all three served in the state House in 2009.

Petition Drive for Part Time Legislature Can Proceed

Over 322,000 signatures are required by July 7th to put proposal on the November ballot
The part-time Legislature petition would cut legislative sessions to 60 days a year and cut lawmakers pay in about half to $35,000 a year. It also would require that any amendments and substitutes to proposed bills would have to be published and held for five days before the Legislature could vote on the bills.
