Poet Mariela Griffor grew up in Chile where she became a political activist against the military dictatorship led by General Augusto Pinochet in the 1970s and 80s. Now Griffor lives with her family near Detroit where she serves as the Michigan Consul to Chile.

The YWCA is holding a poetry night tomorrow to commemorate Love Your Body Day as well as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The National Organization for Women started Love Your Body Day in 1988 to draw attention to ads and other media that negatively affect how women see their bodies.

Poet and psychologist Gail Martin will hold a reading Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at Portage District Library for her new book Begin Empty-Handed, which won this year’s Perugia Press Prize. Perugia Press publishes poetry by up-and-coming female poets every year.

 Red-winged and loud my field this morning suddenly full of them. Clinging to mullen stalks and singing from the snow-battered stems of field grass, the gray skeletons of poke.
