Portage Council still thinking about fireworks rules

PORTAGE, MI - As the last echoes of Fourth of July fireworks fade, Portage continues to wrestle with how to deal with fireworks restrictions the rest of the year. The Portage City Council on Tuesday took no action on a proposed fireworks ordinance that would regulate consumer fireworks all year, continue the ban on shooting them off from 1 a.m.

Portage City Manager receives good review, pay raise

PORTAGE, MI - Portage City Manager Maurice Evans continued to receive solid support from the Portage City Council Tuesday night, receiving a good performance review, a one-time $5,000 bonus and a 2.5 percent raise. Evans, who will have served as city manager for eight years this October, was praised following a 15-minute closed-door meeting for his annual performance review.

Portage City Council approves agreement on closing District Court

PORTAGE, MI - With no discussion, the Portage City Council has voted for a financial agreement with Kalamazoo County over the closing of the Shaver Road district court. The agreement calls for Kalamazoo County paying Portage $70,000 a year for 10 years to cover Portage's costs by the court closing.
