Portage city officials say 17 people have applied to become the next acting city manager. The acting manager would fill the position until Portage finds a permanent manager, hopefully this fall according to Mayor Pro Tem Jim Pearson.

Pearson says council members tentatively plan to discuss the applications for acting manager at a special meeting April 21st. He adds that the council hopes to vote on a candidate in May and have that person start no later than June.

The Portage City Council will hold a special meeting next week to consider the appointment of an acting city manager. Current Portage manager Maurice Evans will retire on April first, and by law the city must appoint a successor within 30 days.

Mayor Pete Strazdas has recommended the appointment of current deputy city manager Brian Bowling. Several council members said they need more time to consider the proposal.

The discount had been in place for more than 30 years and was ended in October
