Portage School Admin Building Demolition Halted

District officials say demolition is expected to resume July 28th.
PORTAGE, MI - Demolition of the former Portage Public Schools Administration Building has been delayed after unexpected asbestos was discovered and had to be removed. Superintendent Mark Bielang and Ron Herron, assistant superintendent of operations, said the demolition was shut down and the asbestos removal company came back to remove the hazardous fire-retardant material that was found behind metal window panels.

PORTAGE, MI - A boost in state aid helps increase the 2014-15 Portage Public Schools budget, but like all school districts PPS continues to wrestle with rising retirement costs. The Portage Board of Education Monday approved the new budget that kicks in July 1 after finance director Karla Colestock detailed the good news-bad news money picture for the $83,586,997 general fund blueprint, up from $80,391,633 in 2013-14.

PORTAGE, MI - Demolition of the former Portage Public Schools Administration Building that was slated to begin Monday has been delayed until next week. Ronald Herron, Portage schools assistant superintendent of operations, said a delay in getting the necessary permits for demolition from the state has resulted in razing the building later than anticipated.

PORTAGE, MI - The old Portage Public Schools Administration Building will have a date with the wrecking ball sometime beginning in May. Shuttered for the past year, the 1922 building that has served as a school, offices and administration building will be demolished to make way for a mostly green space area.
