(MPRN-Lansing) The Legislature has sent Governor Rick Snyder a set of local retirement bills that passed by wide margins once they were stripped of controversial provisions.

City currently pays $6.6-million in retiree health care from the general fund

The city faces a $188 million liability for covering health insurance for retired city employees.

Surprise and relief: several Kalamazoo County commissioners expressed those feelings Tuesday night after the commission unanimously approved changes to the county’s retiree benefit system.

The plan – a compromise worked out over several weeks of intense discussions – is meant to close a projected $63 million funding gap in the county’s eventual medical liability.

Health care premium percentage paid by retirees will go up to 20% in 2016. The savings will be placed in a trust fund
