Many Still Without Power After Storms

Many in southwest Michigan are still without power after severe storms moved through the area last night.

Consumers Energy says about 20,000 customers are still without power in Calhoun County Tuesday afternoon. Power is also out for more than 5800 customers in Kalamazoo County and more than 1600 in Saint Joseph County.

Storm Produces Rare "Inland Tidal Wave" on Gun Lake

Storm caused water to rise dramatically on one end of lake
A severe thunderstorm Wednesday produced a seiche on Gun Lake, between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. A seiche is essentially similar to a tsunami, but on an inland lake, and much less devastating. A seiche forms when a sustained severe wind from one direction pushes more water on a lake to the other side of the lake.

Calhoun County officials defend plowing performance

Some township officials complain about snow and ice removal
Despite complaints, the supervisor of the Calhoun County Road Department is pleased with his office's snow plowing performance this week.'Overall, I'm quite happy with what we got accomplished with the amount of snow, with the winds blowing like they were and then the frigid temperatures,' Jerry Peterson, the department's managing director, said Friday.

State plans to investigate utilities handling of power outages

Consumers Energy and DTE say they welcome review
Michigan regulators will investigate the way two major utilities handled a December ice storm that knocked out power for up to a week for 661,000 customers across the state. Meanwhile, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero appointed a retired Michigan National Guard brigadier general to lead a probe of the performance of a third utility the Lansing Board of Water and Light and asked state regulators to review the probe once its finished.

Battle Creek digs out from winter storm

Schools remain closed, Battle Creek City Hall open Tuesday
Battle Creek police were trading handcuffs Monday for tow straps and most residents stopped whatever they were doing to pick up snow shovels. Bitter cold Monday followed more than a foot of snow Sunday in the Battle Creek area, closing schools, government offices and some businesses.
