Michigan House Approves Bills to Crack Down on Scrap Metal Theft

LANSING - Scrap metal thieves will have a harder time selling stolen property to scrap yards now that a compromise bill easily passed the state House today. "This is the first step toward reducing blight in my community," said state Rep. David Nathan, D-Detroit.

WMU Drops Plan to Buy Homes

Western Michigan University has dropped a controversial plan to buy houses near its East Campus. University officials said Wednesday that they won’t go ahead with the proposal to buy ten properties on Bellevue and Oakland Drive in Kalamazoo for $370,000.

Western’s plan to tear the homes down to create “green space” drew strong criticism by historic preservation advocates. Although they aren’t considered “historic” themselves, the houses are in an historic district.

United Way of Kalamazoo and Battle Creek Region Surpasses Fundraising Goal

KALAMAZOO, MI - The United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region announced Tuesday it surpassed its $14.5 million fundraising goal during a celebration of its 2013 fundraising campaign. More than 500 supporters attended the celebration at Air Zoo, where it was announced contributions totaled $14,563,634.

Kalamazoo County Board Agrees to Extend Bronson Park Lease

KALAMAZOO, MI - A one-year lease extension for Bronson Park was finalized Tuesday night after receiving approval from the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners. Under terms of the lease, the City of Kalamazoo will pay the county $1 to lease the park for 2014.
