Mattawan Receives Grant for Downtown Improvements

MATTAWAN, MI -- The village of Mattawan has received a $285,885 grant for infrastructure improvements along Murray Street. The Community Development Block Grant was announced today by state Rep. Aric Nesbitt (R-Lawton), state Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker (R-Lawton) and village officials at Mattawan Village Hall Friday.

Greg Roehrick, WMU Theatre Professor, Dies at Age 60

In his 35 years of teaching at WMU, Roehrick was awarded a WMU Teaching Excellence Award, a College of Fine Arts Outstanding Service Award, and a College of Fine Arts Dean's Teaching Award.
KALAMAZOO- Greg D. Roehrick, a Western Michigan University professor of theatre who served as scenic designer for more than 125 University Theatre productions, died Feb. 25. He was 60. Roehrick joined the WMU faculty in 1978 and taught design and technical production courses. He served the Department of Theatre as director of design and technical production.

Battle Creek Area MEAP Test Results Show Math Up, Reading Scores Mixed

MEAP Test Results Show Reading and Math Scores Up in Kalamazoo Area Districts

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Considering the Michigan Educational Assessment Program exams administered in October involved testing in seven grades and five subjects, it's hard to make sweeping conclusions about the results released Friday morning. Students in grades 3-8 were tested in math and reading, plus writing in grades 4 and 7, science in grades 5 and 8, and social studies in grades 6 and 9.

Gull Lake to Put School Millage Request Back on Ballot in May

RICHLAND, MI - A Gull Lake Community Schools' millage proposal that was rejected by a slim margin Tuesday will appear again on the May 6 ballot. The 0.65-mill tax increase was defeated Tuesday with total votes of 1,029 against and 1,024 in favor with just more than 50 percent of votes cast.
