White House nixed Detroit bailout as "not viable"

Washington The White House ruled out a bailout for bankrupt Detroit because it wasn't politically possible, a senior Obama administration official said Tuesday. Gene Sperling, the director of the White House National Economic Council and the point person on the administration's efforts to help the struggling Motor City, told reporters Tuesday that it would have raised false hopes if the Obama administration had floated the idea of a bailout for Detroit.

Fewer new students apply to WMU, K College

But officials at both schools say there are more freshmen applying to enter this fall than there were two years ago.
KALAMAZOO, MI - There may be fewer freshmen on campus at both of Kalamazoo's four-year institutions next fall. Both Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College reported that they have received fewer applications than the year before. But the drop at both schools comes after a robust - and in one case, record-breaking - increase in the number of applications in 2013.

DOWAGIAC, MI - John P. Warren has been elected Tribal Council chairman of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians. The seven-year veteran of the tribal council was elevated during a special election on Jan. 25, and sworn into office on Saturday (Feb. 8). He fills leadership posts vacated by Matt Wesaw, who retired in October.

Kellogg Community College Makes Changes in Foundation Leadership
