Michigan House Committee Approves Tax Cut Proposal

Bill adds to debate over what to do with a projected state budget surplus
The House plan would reduce Michigan's personal income tax rate from 4.25 percent to 4.15 percent in October and again to 4.05 percent in 2016. The rate would drop by an addition .1 percent if the state realized a budget surplus of at least $300 million in any given fiscal year, but automatic cuts could not occur in consecutive years.

Kellogg, Community Leaders Have "Cordial" Meeting

Local community leaders who voiced strong opposition to Kellogg Co.'s decision to relocate some jobs to the Grand Rapids area called their meeting Wednesday with some of the company's top officials "cordial," saying all agreed with the need for improved relations. But they maintained Battle Creek is well-suited to house the company's new business services center.

David Brown scored a game-high 23 points as Western Michigan won at Ohio, 73-63, on Wednesday for its sixth consecutive win. It was the first win for the Mid-American Conference-leading Broncos (17-8, 10-3 MAC) in Athens, Ohio since Jan. 22, 2000.
