PORTAGE, MI - Days before Portage school board members held their first public discussion on superintendent applicants, trustees had identified their "preferred candidate," discussed contract details and gave him and his family a tour of Portage neighborhoods in anticipation of their move here, according to emails obtained by MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette.

EMU presidents wins new contract, raise

Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin will remain in charge of the Ypsilanti school for two more years, after receiving a contract extension that was in doubt last fall. The university's Board of Regents unanimously approved the new deal, which stretches Martin's contract until July 7, 2015.

Allied Paper Landfill cleanup protest planned

Opponents of a proposal to keep toxic PCB contamination in a Kalamazoo landfill plan to hold a protest march next week. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has suggested that the material could be safely contained at the Allied Paper Landfill on Kalamazoo’s east side. But area residents, city officials, and environmental groups say it should be completely removed.

Allegan County declares flooding emergency

ALLEGAN, MI -- The Allegan County Board of Commissioners has declared a state of emergency from April's torrential rainfall in an attempt to get state or federal aid. "Many public roads have remained closed due to high water in the area," commission Chair Mark DeYoung said at Thursday's county board meeting.
