Western Michigan University philosophy professor and paper airplane enthusiast Tim McGrew will give paper plane lessons at Kazoo Books on Parkview during the Art Hop on July 10th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.


The trustees also approved a name for the alumni center the university will house in its original building on Prospect Hill. Western plans to call the building Heritage Hall.

Former Western Michigan University president Elson Floyd led the campaign to build the university’s current engineering campus. Now Western will remember Floyd by naming the building that houses the engineering program after him.

When Elson Floyd became President of Western Michigan University in 1998, at 42 he was young for a college president. At the time he was younger than any president of a state university in Michigan. Floyd's death from complications related to colon cancer came Saturday at the young age of 59.

This weekend Western Michigan University will premiere Activate Midwest—a new play festival for new plays—not to be confused with the Theatre Kalamazoo New Play Festival that happens every year, this fest focuses on full length works and draws playwrights from all over the Midwest, not just Kalamazoo.

Jen Hsu was packing books at Western Michigan University’s Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender Student Services office when she found a couple of paper pads. It turns out they served as part file, part scrapbook for the group’s predecessor. Together they cover more than 15 years of local and national LGBT history.
