Students at Western Michigan University will pay just under three percent more in the next academic year than this one for room and board. WMU’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved the 2.95 percent increase for academic year 2014-2015 at their regular meeting Wednesday afternoon.

In a document included with the meeting packet, the board described the rise in cost as necessary to keep up with the university’s “operational” expenses, as well as “building infrastructure needs, debt service, student and University support, and competitiveness with other Universities.”

Western Michigan University’s trustees have approved an increase to President John Dunn’s salary. It will rise to $373, 400 a year.

That’s two and a half percent more than he earned previously.

Other university employees in Dunn’s salary group got a raise at the same rate. Dunn says he plans to donate all income over his starting salary of $345,000 to programs at the university, as he has previously.
