A Stanford University Drama Professor will speak Thursday night at Western Michigan University. Harry Elam Jr. is also a Vice-Provost at the school in Palo Alto, California. He will speak at the Richmond Center Thursday night at 6:00. His address is part of the university’s events to honor Martin Luther King and also part of the Center for Humanities Power and Publics speaker series.

Harvey Hollins III grew up in Southwest Michigan but has spent the last decade working in Detroit. In 2011, Governor Snyder named Hollins director of the Michigan Office of Urban and Metropolitan Affairs. On Monday, Hollins, a Kalamazoo College graduate, will speak at Stetson Chapel as part of the Martin Luther King Junior Convocation. The event begins at 10:50 Monday morning, and is one of the events planned in Kalamazoo to honor the late civil rights leader

Governor Snyder delivered his State of the State address Wednesday night at the state Capitol in Lansing. Republican Representative Aric Nesbitt of Lawton and Democratic Representative Kate Segal of Battle Creek reacted to the speech Thursday morning.

State Representative Margaret O’Brien of Portage is beginning her second term in the Legislature. She spoke with WMUK’s Gordon Evans about end of the last session, and looked ahead to the next two years in office. 

The Portage School Board has accepted the resignation of Superintendent Ric Perry a month after he was suspended for an “inappropriate relationship” with a district employee and ten days before a due process hearing had been scheduled over possibly terminating Perry’s contract. MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette reporter Julie Mack says the two sides will now move to arbitration.
