Fast feet, curly wigs, and straight arms: Learn more about Irish dance

The Quinn School of Irish Dance will perform this weekend at the Blackrock Medieval Festival at Olde World Village in Augusta. Erin Quinn opened the studio 12 years ago where Irish step dancing classes are held year-round. She says not many people realize the school is here or that it’s one of only four schools in Michigan that is certified to compete internationally by a dance commission in Ireland.

Musicians of The Soil and The Sun rise to new heights

The Grand Rapids band The Soil and The Sun will finish out their tour Friday night at 9:30 p.m. at Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo. The band was one of NPR’s top picks at South by Southwest music festival last year in Austin, Texas, and recently played Common Ground Music Fest in Grand Rapids.

Will your death be green? Environmentalists choose natural burial

There are three certified green burial sites in Michigan. Bobbi Parmer and her husband have chosen to be buried at Ridgeview Memorial Gardens, a non-profit site near Grand Rapids.

“My husband and I, we make very conscious choices about our food purchases, our clothing purchases,” Parmer says. “So with end of life planning, we took as much consideration for environmental, social aspects.”

When I was 10, 11, 12, my friends and I spent many a Saturday afternoon sitting through matinee shows of such classics like Yongary, Monster from the Deep or Godzilla versus the Smog Monster We could never get enough, even though the special effects were often laughably tacky, the plots were painfully predictable and the dialogue was unspeakably awful.
