When Angela Flournoy visited her father’s childhood home in East Detroit, she was struck by the contrast between the house and the city surrounding it. Nicolette Hahn Niman

Why would a vegetarian defend beef? Nicolette Hahn Niman, environmental lawyer, rancher, food activist, and vegetarian, does just that in her controversial new book, Defending Beef: The Case for Sustainable Meat Production, The Manifesto of an Environmental Lawyer and Vegetarian Turned Cattle Rancher, published by Chelsea Green in October 2014. Hahn Niman speaks at Kalamazoo College on April 27 at 7 p.m. and at the Portage District Library on April 28 at 6:30 p.m.

This year’s “Celebration of Community Poets” will be held on Thursday, April 16, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. It's free and open to the public.

Gazing at the stars was how it began for Fideler, a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan who moved to Sarajevo in Bosnia in 2011.
