Michigan House committee approves bill to impose sales tax on Internet purchases

Lansing - Online retailers such as Amazon.com and Overstock.com would be required to collect and remit sales taxes for Internet purchases from Michigan residents under legislation a House committee approved Wednesday. Without debate, the House Tax Policy Committee approved a two-bill package to close loopholes in the state's existing sales tax laws that allowed consumers to buy goods tax-free from out-of-state online retailers.
